Last week, we had one of our Business Breakfasts. It was a great turn out and there was great energy in the room. I was talking to a couple of members at the start of the breakfast. I said, “Hey how you going?” And I got low energy answers. They were just a bit flat. We are 8-9 weeks into the year that they’ve been working hard, they may not have had a long enough break at the start of the year and the year is starting to take its toll. They were a bit tired and run down – feeling lethargic. Their mojo was a bit lacking. I started talking to him about how this was affecting his networking.
My name is Edward Plant from The Business League and we basically run events to Connect business owners, Develop business owners’ knowledge and help support business owners Grow their business.
When I was talking about the energy, what came out was that they lack mojo. Tiredness was really impacting on their networking. They drag themselves out of bed, feel tired all the way to the event. So, they get to the event, go straight to coffee and they slouch over the coffee machine and mumble to whoever is there: “How you going?” and “good, good” with no real excitement. The end result, if that continued, they wouldn’t get any connections, they wouldn’t have taken on board some great learnings and they would have missed out. They would have probably been better off in bed.
Now, fortunately the energy in the The Business League is always good and that low feeling doesn’t last for any of our attendees. That doesn’t always happen in all networking events where it’s easy to plateau and keep that same “sorry, sorry” feel about it. But the key here is how you enter a networking event affects the results that you get from that networking event.
There’s couple of things I recommend you to do:
- Be On Your Game. As you’re driving to the networking event, start getting focused, start getting your head on “What you are there for?”, “What is the outcome you want?” and “What energy you’re going to bring to the table?”
- Be Positive. Start off on a positive note. If you’re feeling a bit flat, find a person in the room that you know is normally always bouncing. That person who is telling great stories, they’re always over the top and enthusiastic. There’s always one at a networking event. It doesn’t matter where you network, you’ll always find one and you always find one because they love networking, because they love talking and interacting – so they go to all the events. So find them and feed off some of their energy. Get a bit excited and then go do what you’ve got to do.
- Get a bit of Movement. Don’t just stand there in the corner. Don’t sit in the cold spot. Go, move around and mingle. Maybe go and see the presenter and get some energy off him. Get some good stimulating conversation going.
- Be Active. If you’re feeling sluggish, don’t over eat, just snack and work out what you can do during the event to keep your energy up and get it back on game. Please don’t migrate to the other people that are feeling low because it’ll reflect on your networking.
So basically, how you’re feeling will always reflect the results that you get from your networking. So, with those 4 simple tips I want you to change that energy and get some great attraction with your networking.
I’m Edward Plant from The Business League looking forward to seeing you at our next business breakfast.
