Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons’ face was one that, up until recently, probably looked "vaguely familiar". If you passed him in the street, he was that person who you might have looked twice at, thinking ‘where do I know him from’?
Fast forward to today, and no longer is that face so easily dismiss-able.
As the man-in-charge during Australia’s Worst Bushfire Season on record, Shane’s name and face has become household. And certainly one that is synonymous with Leadership, Compassion and Humanity.
Getting by on just a few hours of sleep each night during the 240 days of fire activity in NSW during the 2019-20 Season, Shane led a team of 70,000 volunteers, co-ordinating troops from HQ and on the ground, while becoming the face the Australian public knew and trusted.
On Wednesday, 6th May, the NSW Rural Fire Service Commission will be sharing what it is really like to Lead through Crisis at an Exclusive Queensland event at The Business League.
Shane Fitzsimmons has over 30 years experience with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) serving as both a volunteer and salaried officer.
After experiencing the death of his own volunteer fire-fighting father and working his way through the ranks, in September 2007 Shane was appointed Commissioner of the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) and also the Chair of the NSW RFS Bushfire Co-ordinating Committee and the Rural Fire Service Advisory Council.
Shane was awarded the National Medal in 1999 and the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) in 2001.
This is going to be a massive and moving morning that you do not want to miss.
