Symphony Hill Wines is a family-owned boutique winery located in the cool climate of Ballandean highlands in Queensland’s Granite Belt. Ewen and Elissa Macpherson bought the old table grape and orchard property in 1996 after falling in love with the area and its potential for premium wine production, and in partnership with Ewen’s parents Bob and Jill Macpherson have developed the vineyard to its present high standard. Symphony Hill Wines is a family focussed venture with, at one stage, four generations of the family living on the property.
Symphony Hill Wines has been rated 5 stars by James Halliday with over 100 different wines rated four stars or more for the last 8 years.
Their flagship is the Reserve Shiraz which has won top gold medals at both Sydney and Melbourne Royal Wine Shows, been awarded 5 stars by James Halliday and served to the Royal Couple in Brisbane in April 2014.
They have won Most Successful QLD Exhibitor Trophy at the Royal Brisbane Show seven times over the last eight years.
Their signature white wine is their Gewurztraminer, having won trophies at both Royal Melbourne and Royal Brisbane Wine Shows.
Ewen completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Viticulture and found the information gained in his studies invaluable in establishing the vineyard to produce ultra-premium quality from the first vintage. In fact their first vintage of Shiraz was awarded top gold at the 2005 Royal Sydney Wine Show and was the first QLD wine to win gold at a national show south of the border.
Ewen is Managing Director and oversees all areas of the business working closely with their winemaker, Mike Hayes. Ewen was voted by the editors of Australian Wine Business Magazine in the top 50 stars of the Australian Wine Industry after featuring Symphony Hill Wines on their front cover.
So where is their wine sold? Their wine can be found in many of South East QLD’s top restaurants such as Esquire, Aria, GOMA, QLD Performing Arts Centre and Il Centro. Their cellar door is very busy in winter when people come to the Granite Belt to experience log fires and freezing temperatures. They have a large wine club where members receive regular deliveries of their exclusive wine. They also export their wines to China with their biggest seller being a wine named in honour of their daughter they adopted from China in 2004. The wine is named ‘Dan Ying’ and translates to Red Singing Bird with a portion of sales being donated to charities supporting Asian orphans.
